Even though we may be physically distanced hazing can still occur and we must stay vigilant. We each have a responsibility to stop hazing behaviors, not only in our own chapters but the community as whole (both Greek and IU). National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW) is an opportunity to collectively discuss hazing prevention efforts, but it also shouldn’t be the only time we talk about it. Below are several options for your chapter/council to engage in hazing prevention conversations. Your inter/national organization may also have resources available for you. Connect with your chapter coach to determine the best ways to keep the conversation going in your chapter after NHPW is over.
- Sunday, September 20th at 7:00 PM Eastern
Attend Love, Mom & Dad: Turning Tragedy into Progress, a live national town hall and panel, as a group. Sign up at https://bit.ly/3ba2cPN or watch a livestream on HazingPrevention.org’s Facebook page.
- Monday, September 21st
Wear purple in support of National Hazing Prevention Week. Take a selfie and/or a group photo safely in-person or via zoom and post to your personal and chapter’s social media accounts. Tag @OSFL_IU and @hazingprevention on Instagram and use #NHPW2020.
- Tuesday, September 22nd
Ensure all members of your organization know the definition of hazing by playing a fun review game using Kahoot or a similar app. IU’s hazing definition and examples can be found here. Once members know what hazing is, make a pledge to prevent hazing from happening in your chapter and the Greek community here.
- Wednesday, September 23rd
Host a chapter meeting or program to discuss hazing prevention efforts within your chapter and Greek community. Zeta Tau Alpha’s headquarters has provided several workshops and conversation starters for organizations to adapt and use for free. You can also utilize this time to brainstorm what future hazing prevention initiatives you would like to see in the Greek community and share that with Assistant Director for Wellness and Prevention, Karlee Nuttelman, at knuttel@iu.edu.

As designated by the Office of Student Conduct, the board meets with sorority and fraternity organizations who have alleged policy violations through the university’s educational conduct process to determine responsibility for code violations and develop individualized action plans. The SFL J-Board is a peer accountability process, in which board members consider the safety and security of the Indiana University community, individualized education, the mission of Indiana University, and the core values of the Office of Student Conduct and the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life, while determining the outcome of organization cases. If needed, members of the SFL J-Board may also serve as the student panelist for cases involving non-sorority and fraternity organizations, as well as for formal administrative conferences for sorority and fraternity organizations.
