Academic Excellence in Sorority and Fraternity Life

Academic excellence is a shared value amongst our sorority and fraternity organizations. All sorority and fraternity organizations at IU have minimum GPA requirements for their new and initiated members. Additionally, many organizations seek to support their members’ academic achievements through intentional programming, study tables, incentives, and peer-to-peer support.

Because academic success within all student organizations can fluctuate from time to time given the transition of members, the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life prepares a Community GPA Report each semester to provide insight into organization’s cumulative GPAs and how they compare to the rest of the IU community.

You can view the most recent semester’s community grade report and past semester reports in the Documents section of OSFL’s beINvolved page.

Are you interested in joining a Sorority or Fraternity, but worried about how it will impact your academics?

Joining a sorority or fraternity and staying on top of your grades may be tough, but it is not impossible. Your grades may even improve with the right amount of structure and support. Here are some strategies for keeping your grades up as a sorority or fraternity members:

  • Ask your sorority or fraternity for help. Your Greek brothers and sisters want to see you pass, so reach out if you need the extra help. Sorority and Fraternity organizations can help you by offering scholarships, tutors, and time management programs. Some chapters also have mandatory study hours.
  • Attend your professors’ office hours. They, too, want to help you succeed in your courses.
  • Don't skip class. While it’s not easy to wake up for an 8 a.m. class, it’s much harder to catch up on the lectures you missed.
  • Don't procrastinate. You never know when a mandatory event will ruin your plans to write a paper the night before it’s due. Be diligent and stay on top of your assignments.
  • Get some sleep. It is impossible to focus on anything if you’re sleep deprived.
