Veteran & Military Services

Serving those who have served

The Center for Veteran and Military Students supports veterans and military-connected students as they transition to IU and navigate campus life. We’re here to help you connect with resources, build community, and feel supported throughout your time at IU.

Beyond certifying VA education benefits, the Center is a welcoming place to study, relax, eat lunch, and connect with other students. We also host events throughout the year designed to build community and help you feel at home on campus. Follow us on Instagram to stay up to date on upcoming events and opportunities.

What we do

For veterans and military-connected students:

We’re here to support our military-affiliated students from their first day on campus until graduation. IU Bloomington defines a military-affiliated student to be someone who is a United States Armed Forces veteran, a spouse of a veteran, a dependent of a veteran, or a member currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. IU recognizes both past and present military service members and their family members as military-affiliated. If you are a military-affiliated student, we can:

  • Help you understand your military education benefits and process the paperwork necessary to use them at IU Bloomington
  • Connect you to other campus and community resources
For the campus community:

We also serve the IU Bloomington community by:

  • Educating students, faculty, and staff about the needs of veterans and military-connected students
  • Coordinating campus recognition of military-related observances such as Veterans Day and Memorial Day
  • Maintaining IU’s Golden Book, a record of all members of the IU family who have served in the U.S. military

You are welcome to visit us for business or just to stop in, relax, and grab a drink or a snack! We have a great space to take a break during the day.

IU's military tradition

Indiana University’s connections to the United States military date back to the school’s founding in 1820. Many of IU’s first students, faculty members, and trustees had military ties, including some who served in the War of 1812.

IU’s proud tradition of military involvement has remained strong over the past 200 years. Today the IU Bloomington campus is home to more than 500 veterans and nearly 750 military spouses and dependents.
