Safety tips and strategies

We encourage you to protect yourself and others whenever possible. Start by following these general safety tips:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Listen to your intuition. If you feel like something is wrong, it probably is.
  • Don’t be afraid to yell, scream, or run for protection.
  • Remember that alcohol and drugs can impair how you perceive and react to situations. Perpetrators target people who have been drinking or using other substances, so talk with your friends about a safety plan for when you go out and how you plan to return home.
  • Safely speak up, step in, or call authorities if you see someone who could be in trouble.
