Accessible Van Service

Get help getting around campus

The Office of Disability Services for Students (DSS) offers accessible van service for Indiana University Bloomington students who have a severely limiting permanent mobility disability.

If space is available, students with temporary mobility limitations may be accommodated on a first-come, first-serve basis. The service provides rides only to your scheduled classes during standard hours of operation.

Hours of operation

Monday through Thursday

  • First ride: 7:30 a.m.
  • Last ride: 7:30 p.m.

Friday

  • First ride: 7:30 a.m.
  • Last ride: 4 p.m.

The van does not pick up or drop off outside of university property. If you live off campus, please consider other options.

Request service

Your access coordinator will assist you during Accommodation Orientation. For apparent mobility limitations, no additional documentation is needed. For non-apparent mobility limitations, follow the documentation steps on this page.

Temporary impairments

To use the van service, you must contact DSS and request to be added to the van schedule. You’ll also need to provide documentation of your mobility limitation to DSS. If your impairment is obvious—for example, you’re using crutches—you can receive the first five days of service without documentation.

Documentation requirements

Your documentation must:

  • Be written and signed by the treating medical professional on official letterhead and/or clinic/hospital forms (notes on script pads are not acceptable)
  • Provide a diagnosis/description of the medical problem
  • Provide an estimated duration of mobility limitations. If you need an extension of service, you must submit additional documentation from the treating medical professional to explain the need for continuing service.

DSS will review your documentation and determine whether you’re eligible for service. When your eligiblity has been confirmed, DSS will notify the van coordinator via email and copy you at your IU email address. The Van Service Reference Guide will be attached to this email. It is your (the student’s) responsibility to follow up with the van coordinator and make arrangements. If you have not contacted the van coordinator within two days, your name will be removed from the list.

Student responsibilities

Tardiness

The van will not wait for you if you are late for pickup. If you miss the van, you will be recorded as a no-show.

If you miss a pickup, you may call the van coordinator to request that the van return to pick you up. The van driver will make all other stops before returning for you.

Cancellations

If you have excessive cancellations, you will be required to meet with the van coordinator to figure out the cause of your cancellations and to determine if you remain eligible to use the van service.

If you’re still eligible, the van coordinator will work with you to address the cause of your cancellations and ensure that you avoid future cancellations.

If you’re no longer eligible, any scheduled rides will be cancelled immediately.

No-shows

If you miss a ride without calling ahead to cancel it, you are considered a no-show. If this happens, the van service will take your name off the schedule for that day. If you need other rides that day, you should call the van coordinator to reschedule.

If you miss scheduled rides on two consecutive days or on three nonconsecutive days in one week, you will lose your van service privileges. You may reinstate your privileges by meeting with your DSS access coordinator or the DSS director to explain the circumstances that led to the missed rides.
