Maybe you want to appeal a grade. Maybe you need help responding to a misconduct charge. Whatever the situation, the Indiana University Bloomington Student Advocates Office is here for you.

Who are the Student Advocates and what do they do?

Student Advocates are retired IU faculty and staff members who volunteer their time and expertise to help students deal with academic and personal challenges. With decades of experience at IU, they are knowledgeable about university policies and procedures and understand how to get things done.

The role of a Student Advocate is to work alongside you to address any issues that are preventing you from successfully completing your degree at IU.

How do I get help from a Student Advocate?

Student Advocates are available to meet with you Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. You can make an appointment by calling 812-855-0761 or emailing advocate@indiana.edu, or you can drop in at the Student Advocates Office in Eigenmann Hall West. If you aren’t able to come into the office, you can talk with a Student Advocate on the phone.

You also have the option of submitting a Care Referral to request help.

What should I expect from my Student Advocate?

You can expect your Student Advocate to listen nonjudgmentally and provide unconditional support. To help you resolve your situation, your Student Advocate will:

  • Help you think through your options and understand the possible outcomes
  • Empower you to make informed decisions
  • Help you understand IU policies and procedures
  • Assist you with tasks such as preparing an appeal
  • Connect you to additional support and resources

Your Student Advocate will not:

  • Provide counseling or therapy
  • Excuse absences
  • Change grades
  • Tell you what to do or make decisions for you
