SLL’s Student Organization Awards recognize the successes and accomplishments of student organizations, advisors, and student leaders.

Student Organization Awards Categories
  • Event of the Year Award

    The Event of the Year Award is presented to a student organization that held an outstanding event for the Indiana University community during the past year. Group who can demonstrate they successfully navigated the event planning process, exhibited critical thinking and problem-solving skills, welcomed a diverse population of participants, and enriched the co-curricular experience of IU students are encouraged to apply.

    The winning student organization will receive $150.00, and a trophy to recognize their outstanding achievements.

  • Community Engagement Award

    The organization demonstrates through action the importance of serving the campus, community, country, and the world. Groups involved with hands-on service activities, philanthropic and fundraising events, political and/or advocacy efforts, or other civic engagement-related pursuits are encouraged to apply.

    The winning student organization will receive $150.00, and a trophy to recognize their outstanding achievements.

  • Collaboration Award

    The Collaboration Award is presented to a student organization, or two or more partnering student organizations, that collaborated to develop a program, event, or initiative that benefited the campus and/or community. This can be a single or ongoing program, event, or initiative.

    The winning student organization(s) will receive $150.00, and a trophy to recognize their outstanding achievements.

  • Diversity & Inclusion Award

    The Diversity & Inclusion Award is presented to a student organization that demonstrates an active commitment to issues of diversity, inclusion, and social justice. The organization has demonstrated this active commitment through its programming and initiatives.

    The winning student organization will receive $150.00, and a trophy to recognize their outstanding achievements.

  • Leadership Development Award

    The Leadership Development Award is presented to a student organization that facilitates leadership development and promotes leadership opportunities for its members, the campus, and the community. Organizations that have developed a leadership philosophy, promote lectures or guest speakers, organize and manage retreats and workshops, and/or other leadership-related activities are encouraged to apply.

    The winning student organization will receive $150.00, and a trophy to recognize their outstanding achievements.

  • Student Organization of the Year Award

    The Student Organization of the Year Award is presented to an organization that has been registered for at least 3 years. This organization must demonstrate excellence in the areas of community engagement, collaboration, diversity and inclusion, and leadership development.

    The winning student organization will receive $150.00, and a trophy to recognize their outstanding achievements.

  • New Student Organization of the Year Award

    The New Student Organization of the Year Award is presented to an organization that has been registered for 1-2 years. This organization must show potential in the areas of community engagement, collaboration, diversity and inclusion, and leadership development.

    The winning student organization(s) will receive $150.00, and a trophy to recognize their outstanding achievements.


  • McKaig Legacy Award

    Dean Dick McKaig has been a member of the Indiana University Bloomington community since 1971. He is well known for being a student-centered educator and a strong advocate for advancing students’ curricular and co-curricular experiences here at IUB. He was Director of Student Activities at Indiana University - Bloomington for 8 years before serving as Dean of Students for almost two decades, which included roles as Vice Provost and Vice President for Student Affairs.

    This award is presented to an organization that has been registered for at least 5 years. The student organization must be able to demonstrate how it embodies the legacy of Dean Emeritus Richard McKaig. The student organization must provide examples of how it has left a legacy related to civic engagement, collaboration, diversity and inclusion, and leadership development.

    The winning student organization will receive $250.00, and a trophy to recognize their outstanding achievements.

    **Exceptional applications from the Student Organization of the Year Award will be considered for this award. There is no additional application.

  • Student Organization Leader of the Year Award

    This award recognizes a freshman, sophomore, or junior whose vision, vitality, and diligence has made significant contributions to the IUB community through leadership in a student organization.

    Applicants must submit 2 recommendation letters, a resume of their co-curricular activities, and a maximum 200 word essay on their accomplishments, future goals, and what was learned as a leader of a student organization.

    The winning student will receive a gift from the Indiana University Bookstore, and a trophy to recognize their outstanding achievements.

  • Student Organization Advisor of the Year Award

    Students may nominate their advisor by submitting 2 letters of recommendation on behalf of their advisor addressing why this person should receive this honor. One page single-space maximum for each letter.

    The winning advisor will receive a gift from the Indiana University Bookstore, and a trophy to recognize their outstanding achievements.

    ** Advisors who receive compensation for their advisor responsibilities are not eligible.
