Community Engagement

Hoosier Alternative Breaks

Hoosier Alternative Breaks (HAB) envisions a campus where every IUB student has the opportunity to explore, serve, and learn through an alternative break experience. We support individual students seeking out experiences, as well as 20+ registered student organizations that plan, coordinate, and lead alternative break experiences.

Philosophy

HAB is more than a program and more than a trip. We aim to engage you in service experiences that spark deep learning about yourself and your role in the world.

Alternative breaks are service experiences where students travel locally, across the US and the globe in small groups to work in partnership with host organizations on community-driven service and social justice projects. We use the term “alternative breaks” because it is recognized nationally and includes us in a community of programs at universities who strive to create positive social change.

Hallmarks of HAB include the Eight Components of a Quality Alternative Break and the Active Citizen Continuum.
