Action Plans and Sanctions

You may think of it as a sanction, but at the Office of Student Conduct we call it an action plan.

Sanctions imply punishment, one sided, authoritative or a loss of reward. At IU, we use an action plan to promote partnership and student learning. In fact, any action plan you may be assigned is intended to educate and to help you realign with institutional values.

Failure to complete an assigned action plan can result in additional allegation of a violation of the Code or having a university hold placed on your account. A university hold will prevents future enrollment and access to other services of the Registrar’s Office. Holds are not lifted until all action plan items have been completed.

Action plans are assigned to a student when he or she is found responsible for a violation of University regulations. 

Action plans may include educational opportunities within one or more of the five pillars:  

  • Educational Pillar – can include warnings, disciplinary probation, suspension, expulsion and serves as
  • Knowledge Pillar – can include educational seminars, bulletin board creation, Academic integrity seminar, DMCA seminar, and other learning experiences. This pillar focuses on the knowledge from community members on campus about specific behaviors that caused a moment of incongruence.
  • Restorative Pillar – can include restitution, letter of apology, mediation, community service, and topical presentations. This pillar focuses on restorative justice related activities that are designed to “give back” to the person and/or community affected by the behavior.
  • Reflective Pillar – can include reflection papers, closure meetings, and potential meeting with an impacted party. This pillar focuses on self-reflection on one’s actions and the impact of those actions on others.
  • Wellness Pillar – can include alcohol/drug education with OASIS, CaPs assessment, anger management, and off campus counseling. This pillar focuses on promoting the well-being of a student, especially those who might want emotional support on or off campus.
Action Plan Pillars
