Policies on Records
The disciplinary records of Indiana University students are maintained by the Dean of Students in the Office of Student Ethics and Anti-Harassment Programs. The records normally would include the following: the original report(s) on the incident(s) or situation(s) alleged to be a violation of University regulations and all correspondence between the Dean of Students or his designee and the student.
Effective August 15, 1997:
- Disciplinary records that include suspension or expulsion from the University may be kept indefinitely
- Disciplinary records that include disciplinary probation, expulsion from university housing and/or academic misconduct may be retained for five years beyond a student’s graduation, withdrawal, or transfer from the university
- Disciplinary records which concern findings of responsibility for academic misconduct may be retained for five years beyond a student’s graduation, withdrawal, or transfer from the university
- All other disciplinary records are destroyed after graduation, unless special circumstances warrant retaining of the files
Effective July 1, 2006:
- For all academic years beginning with the fall, 2006 semester, any disciplinary records that are kept at the Office of Student Ethics will NOT include the student’s social security number anywhere within the file. The student’s file will be maintained only under the student’s individual ten digit I.U. identification number
- Suspensions from the University are noted on student transcripts during the period of suspension
- Expulsions from the University are permanently noted on student transcripts
