Grand Expeditions

Grand Expeditions

The Grand Expeditions take inspiration from IU’s “summer tramps” held during the 1880s and early 1890s which offered co-educational trips through Europe, combining educational and research opportunities with tourism. These Grand Expeditions this summer will pay homage to this spirit of adventure with an active twist, coordinating with IUOA and Alpenglow Education.

Curt Davidson and Ellen Henderson, program directors of these Grand Expeditions, both served as IUOA trip leaders and instructors for many years and continue to be friends of the program today. They are so excited to be collaborating with their alma mater and with a program that meant so much to them during their time here.

Register for a trip of a lifetime

France: June 11-17

Join us for an amazing adventure in the birthplace of mountaineering! We will be exploring the historic mountain village of Chamonix, mountaineering in the Mont Blanc Massif, and riding one of the tallest gondolas in the world while touring the Aiguille du Midi. Of course, no trip to France would be complete without sampling some culinary delights, including escargot, fromage, crepes, and croissants! We can’t wait for you to join us! You do not want to miss this amazing experience.

Switzerland June 24-30

Experience the adventure capital of Europe and the “Valley of the 72 Waterfalls” for a whitewater rafting trip in Interlaken, Switzerland. Take the world’s oldest cogwheel train to Jungfraujoch, and walk on the glaciers under the peaks of the Swiss Alps. A day is reserved for you to choose your own adventure: paraglide through the peaks and over the valley, paddle boarding or kayaking while exploring Lake Brienz, or go on a hike or boat tour. Relax and unwind after the day’s activities with the finest food Switzerland has to offer including roschti, fondue, and gelato!

Austria: July 4-12th

Explore Austria with a trek through the Eagle Walk, or Alderweg trail, which is one of the most breathtaking hiking trails in Europe! Enjoy beautiful scenery during the day and comfortable lodgings in the evenings in alpine huts resembling catered chalets with delicious, home cooked, local cuisine. Exploring Innsbruck is an additional adventure in this trip, the town made famous by the movie Sound of Music. Don’t miss this opportunity of a lifetime to walk amongst the Austrian Alps!

IUOA is thrilled to be collaborating with the University Historian, IU Alumni Association, Office of Overseas Study, Office of International Partnerships, Office of the Bicentennial, and Alpenglow Education to make these Grand Expeditions possible!
