COVID-19 - Financial Assistance for Students
WEDNESDAY, MAY 20, 2020
Dear Students –
It gives me great hope to announce today that Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) was recently awarded $12 million from the Federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to assist students who meet the funding qualifications and are experiencing financial hardships caused by COVID-19.
All IUB undergraduate, graduate, and professional students can apply for COVID-19 emergency aid. Emergency funding can be used for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations because of the coronavirus such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and childcare. Those of you who are not eligible for CARES Act funding will be considered for IU donor funds specifically designed to support students. Awards will average from $500–$1,500. Funds awarded are grants to students and do not require repayment.
In order to determine your CARES Act eligibility, we have created the COVID-19 Emergency Fund Request application that will help identify which funds best meet your needs. If you are among the 2,700 students who have already requested emergency relief, you do not need to reapply.
For students from the United States, if you have not yet completed the 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you will need to do so within the application process. The FASFA process takes less than one hour to complete and you can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool within the application to pre-populate the federal tax return information. CARES Act awards will not influence your financial aid but an application is necessary to complete the process.
Please note: due to federal laws, it is best for graduating students to submit their application no later than this Friday, May 8.
